Zeta Chapter History
The Zeta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota was founded on November 27, 1911 at the College of Musical Art in Indianapolis, IN. In 1928, Arthur Jordan bought and joined the Indiana College of Music and Fine Arts and the Metropolitan School of Music to form the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music. As the Zeta chapter prospered, the Arthur Jordan Conservatory joined with Butler University to become the Jordan College of Music in 1951. When dance, theater, and visual arts came to Butler in 1978, the College of Music became known as the Jordan College of Fine Arts (JCFA). In 2006, JCFA was awarded accreditation from the National Association of School of Music (NASM) and is now the Jordan College of Fine Arts School of Music.
The Zeta Chapter has been honored in the past by receiving the National Collegiate Chapter Achievement Award in 1973-1974 and 2006. In 2005, 2006 and 2010, Zeta Chapter received the Collegiate Chapter Province Achievement Award for Beta A. The many members who have given our chapter its reputation have gone on to make a better name for themselves in their future and have also honored the Zeta Chapter. Recent Zeta Chapter service projects have included volunteering with the Girl Scouts of Indiana, the Indianapolis Humane Society, and Teacher’s Treasures. Members of the Zeta Chapter are also involved in other university organizations such as Student Government Association, Residential Life, National Association for Music Education (NAfME, formally known as MENC), Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), Tau Beta Sigma, and the Study Abroad Program. In 2006 Zeta Chapter, along with Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, assisted the YMCA with the production of Butler’s oldest tradition, Spring Sing, and in 2007 became solely responsible for the event. Our members are active participants in the Butler Symphony Orchestra, Butler Wind Ensemble, Butler Jazz Bands, Butler Chorale, University Choir, Lyric Theatre, Butler University Marching Band, and the Butler University Basketball Band.
